Long Beach Police Department (New York)

Long Beach Police Department (New York) is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Long Beach on the South Shore of Long Island. Established in 1911, it currently has approximately 78 sworn members.[1]

LBPD Headquarters is located at One West Chester Street, Long Beach, NY, across from the Long Beach Fire Department. The Police Commissioner is Thomas R. Sofield, Sr.

Specialized Units

History

The Long Beach Police Department, commonly referred to by the acronyms LBPD has been serving the Long Beach, Lido Beach, Point Lookout, and East Atlantic Beach Communities since 1911. The Department has several units that work together with the nearby Nassau County Police Department. The Department originally started with 36 police offciers, who were issued six-shot revolvers. Now, the LBPD has state of the art equipment, including non-lethal weapons. The LBPD revoked its Motorcycle Unit in 1960 and revived it in 2005. It is currently used for the Traffic Unit and ceremonial details. In 2008, the Marine Unit was started. The jail is located inside Police Headquarters. In 2011, the Long Beach Police Department was featured on the popular television series, Speeders.

Background

The City of Long Beach, a community of more than 35,000 residents, has been served since 1911 by the Long Beach Police Department. Commissioner Thomas R. Sofield, Sr. leads the Department. In addition to the Uniformed Patrol Force, the Department has the following specialized units: Detective Division, Narcotics Task Force, Street Crimes Unit, Traffic Division and Motorcycle Unit and Identification Division, and Emergency Services Unit, which acts as the SWAT team. There is an active cadre of dedicated civilian employees who provide support and special services such as Clerical Staff, Parking Enforcement and School Crossings. The Department employs Bicycle Patrols on the Boardwalk and in the West End and Four Wheel Drive vehicle patrol on the beach. The Long Beach Police Department adopted the proactive philosophy of Community Policing in that it seeks to develop working partnerships between Community Leaders, Citizens and Patrol Officers.. The LBPD issues its officers take home cars. Aside from officer's service weapons, the departemnt also utilizes a wide variety of non-lethal weapons, such as pepper spray, expandable batons, TASERs, as well as pepperball devices.

Auxiliary Police

The Long Beach Police Department also has an Auxiliary Unit, where members, who are certified in CPR/AED assist with parade crowd control, bike patrols, beach and boardwalk patrols, as well as school patrols. Members serve as the "Eyes and Ears of the Long Beach Police Department", and carry a baton, handcuffs, pepper spray, a flashlight, and a radio.

During the busy summer months, Special Officers are recruited from Criminal Justice Programs at local colleges to assist with crowd control and enforcement at the Ocean Beach Park and other areas.

In the summer of 2007, the LBPD be started using two Segway people movers on the boardwalk for patrol. Long Beach police are the first to use Segways on Long Island.[2]
